About the course
Build in-demand skills for renewable grid integration with PSCAD
The Grid Integration of Renewables Using PSCAD course offers a unique opportunity for engineering professionals to build expertise in one of the most critical areas of modern power systems—renewable energy integration. Delivered in collaboration with industry leader Aurecon, the course provides hands-on experience using PSCAD, the gold standard in simulation tools for electromagnetic transient studies across Australia’s National Electricity Market. Participants gain a deep understanding of the Generator Performance Standards (GPS) outlined in the National Electricity Rules and learn how to apply these in practical grid connection studies. By aligning closely with AEMO’s connection processes and industry expectations, this course equips engineers with the skills and knowledge to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving energy sector.

Learning outcomes
Practical PSCAD skills and real-world grid integration knowledge
This five-day course is designed to equip you with the technical skills and practical knowledge needed to model and analyse renewable-integrated power systems using PSCAD. The first three days cover core concepts in power system analysis and PSCAD fundamentals, while the final two days focus on real-world case studies delivered by expert facilitators from Aurecon. By simulating industry-relevant scenarios, you will gain the confidence to apply your learning to grid connection studies aligned with the National Electricity Rules (NER) and AEMO requirements. A PSCAD educational license is provided for practice during and up to one week after the course.
What you'll learn
Throughout this course, you’ll develop the skills to model and analyse renewable-integrated power systems using PSCAD, with a focus on both foundational principles and advanced, real-world applications. You’ll learn how to simulate steady-state and transient conditions, build key components like grid-connected voltage source converters (VSCs) and apply control strategies within PSCAD. The course also covers how to assess generator performance and system behaviour in response to disturbances, evaluate distributed generation impacts and ensure compliance with the National Electricity Rules (NER) - all essential for effective grid integration in today’s energy landscape.
Topics covered
Foundations:
- Model a simple power system and perform steady-state and transient analysis
- Apply PSCAD modelling in line with core power system theories
- Build and simulate components of a grid-connected voltage source converter (VSC)
- Demonstrate key aspects of power system control
Industry Application:
- Analyse generator system responses to voltage disturbances and contingency events
- Evaluate the impact of distributed generation on the NEM network
- Assess system performance in line with NER requirements
