Recent interdisciplinary scholarship has increasingly demonstrated the need to highlight the social heterogeneity of multiple Chinese diasporas instead of a singular Chinese diaspora.

This exhibition showcases video and other photographic works by the artist Tan Lijie evocative of multiple shifting encounters between lived realities and enchanted realms.

Dr Minerva Inward will explore how peasant artists responded to, and even questioned, this limited conception of their creative capacities, exposing the underlying tensions of this project to enlist skill in shaping socialist class identities in Mao’s China.
