What is Business Beyond Borders?

Business Beyond Borders (BBB) is a consulting program that connects small- and medium-sized enterprises with skilled UNSW students to support their international expansion. It's led by Dr SJ Yang, a lecturer with hands-on multinational and cross-cultural experience, and supervised by academics from UNSW's School of Management and Governance.

Student consulting teams with international business training (e.g., Bachelor of Commerce, Master of Commerce with an International Business major, and the Master of International Business program) will deliver research-driven insights, market analyses and strategic recommendations to help businesses grow internationally.

The outputs from these student consulting teams have allowed several businesses to take their first steps in expanding globally.

Business Beyond Borders collaborates with businesses that match any of these criteria:
  • Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
  • Australian companies exploring international markets
  • Start-ups planning global expansion

This program is purpose-built for businesses looking to expand internationally into any global market, with previous projects conducting student market research into Asia, Europe and the Middle East.

Some of the business challenges that BBB helps businesses solve include:
  • Which international markets may offer the strongest growth opportunities for our business?
  • What market entry strategies could be suitable for expanding into a specific country or region?
  • How should our product or brand be adapted for international markets?
  • What competitive dynamics exist in a potential target market?

BBB provides your business with valuable recommendations and findings that can build your global expansion strategy. You'll work with UNSW's brightest minds on real-world challenges, with expert academics guiding every step.

Outside the core deliverables, partnering with BBB means you can:

  • Access a variety of diverse perspectives and innovative thinking from a global Top 20 university.
  • Tap into international expertise from students with lived experience in each region's business landscape.
  • Network with emerging talent that can turn into a potential recruitment pipeline.
  • Make an impact on students and foster learning opportunities for developing professionals.

Business Beyond Borders connects you to experienced student teams who can help you grow your business internationally.

Step 1 - Submit a business challenge

You'll propose an international business challenge, such as:

  • Market entry strategy
  • International expansion planning
  • Market opportunity analysis
  • Localisation or adaptation strategies

Step 2 - Course matching

We match you with a relevant UNSW course like International Business Consulting Practicum.

You’ll then have an initial consultation meeting with the student team. We’ll discuss your challenge, refine the scope and confirm the project timeline & engagement format.

Step 3 - Student consulting projecting

Student teams work on your challenge over approximately 10–12 weeks, supported by academic supervision and structured project milestones.

Step 4 - Final deliverables

At the end of the project, you’ll get:

  • Tailored student insights & market research to inform long term strategy
  • A report which outlines recommendations to help your international expansion

Students get hands-on, practical experience supporting clients through the Business Beyond Borders program. Watch this video to learn more about the BBB experience for businesses:
