Sandy Middleton is the Professor of Nursing, and Director of the Nursing Research Institute at St Vincent’s Health Network Sydney, St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne and Australian Catholic University. She is a Mackillop Distinguished Professor at Australian Catholic University, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences and an NHMRC Leadership Fellow. Over the last 20 years, Sandy has led multiple programs of research around how to effect clinician behaviour change in line with best evidence. She has an international reputation leading the Quality in Acute Stroke Care Research Program, implementing nurse-initiated protocols to manage fever, hyperglycaemia and swallowing after stroke including successful implementation into 72 hospitals within 18 European countries. She also led the ACCELERATE Program of research, a series of trials aimed at improving patient assessment and communication in acute hospitals.
