You are invited to an upcoming event focused on interdisciplinary approaches to the ‘symptom’. From Gramsci’s ‘morbid symptoms’ of social crisis to Jameson’s ‘symptomatic reading’ of literature’s political unconscious; from the symptom as a sign to be interpreted, to the symptom as a problem to be managed; from psychoanalysis to medicine — symptoms abound in our conjuncture. How are we to read them? What would a symptomology of the present look like? In what discipline, or disciplines, would such a study occur?

The public component of this one-day workshop will include six presentations from scholars across UNSW (and beyond!), each treating the symptom from a different point of departure.

Speakers:

  • Professor Sarah Brouillette (Carleton University)
  • Associate Professor Vicki Sentas (Law & Justice, UNSW)
  • Dr Andrew Brooks (School of Arts & the Media, UNSW)
  • Associate Professor Sigi Jottkandt (School of Arts & the Media, UNSW)
  • Toyah Webb (PhD candidate, School of Art & Design, UNSW)
  • Dr Faraidoon Haghdoost (Medicine & Health, UNSW).

The event will be moderated by Dr Astrid Lorange (School of Art & Design, UNSW)
