Project Overview:

The Triple B Study: ‘Bumps, Babies and Beyond’ is an innovative Australian study of approximately 1,600 families. The project is a longitudinal pregnancy cohort which examines a range of biopsychosocial factors that relate to the health and development of Australian children and families. The project has a key focus on examining the impacts of substance use and mental health in pregnant women and their partners during the prenatal period on child development and family functioning.

Design and Method:

The research design involves a longitudinal pregnancy cohort study, in which pregnant women and their partners were recruited during the prenatal period (conception to birth). Participants were recruited between 2008 to 2013 from public antenatal clinics in New South Wales and Western Australia. Participants were also recruited through specialist drug and alcohol antenatal services. Families have since been followed up at key ages and stages of child development, across infancy, middle childhood and adolescence.

The Triple B Study is a multi-institutional project and is administered through Deakin University. For detailed project information, please contact the project leaders at https://lifespan.deakin.edu.au/our-research/project/triple-b-pregnancy-cohort-study-bumps-babies-and-beyond/

Benefits:

The findings from this research project will inform public health, prevention and treatment initiatives that aim to improve the health and wellbeing of children and families both in Australia and internationally.
