Data linkage to determine the long-term health and substance use outcomes of residential substance use treatment

Calvert Tisdale is a postdoctoral research fellow at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre at UNSW. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Queensland with Dr. Janni Leung, Dr. Dominique de Andrade, and Prof. Leanne Hides. Calvert's PhD was completed with the support of an alcohol and other drug service provider to evaluate the long-term outcomes of their residential substance use treatment services through the linkage of health service and death registry data.

Dr Calvert Tisdale will present work from his PhD that used data linkage to investigate a cohort of individuals who accessed residential treatment in Queensland, Australia. Findings from his research conducted throughout his PhD aimed to inform strategies to improve the delivery of these residential services.

Across four studies, Dr Tisdale investigated a cohort of 1056 individuals accessing residential treatment services and retrospectively examined their in-treatment and post-treatment outcomes. This includes a characterisation of the cohort and factors associated with completing residential treatment. He will present findings that utilised linked data from hospitals, emergency departments, mental health service providers, AOD service providers, and the Registry of Deaths. Through these services, he examined the health and substance use outcomes of residential treatment, including alcohol and other drug-related service utilisation, suicidality, and premature mortality.
