Both lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and psilocybin (‘magic mushrooms’) are used as recreational drugs, and there is renewed interest in their clinical use. In this webinar, we examine the circumstances of death, characteristics and toxicology of fatalities in Australia related to LSD and magic mushrooms. The implications for both illicit use and clinical practice are discussed.

About the speaker

Professor Shane Darke is a leading world expert on the health effects associated with substance use. He has published widely in the area of illicit drug use, including ground-breaking work on opioid overdose, psychostimulant overdose, psychopathology, suicide, trauma, treatment outcome and toxicology. He has written many seminal works, particularly on opioid overdose, has published more than 300 articles and 6 books, and is listed in the top 0.1% of substance dependence researchers worldwide. His most recent books are The Clinician‘s Guide to Illicit Drugs and Health (2019), The Pocket Guide to Illicit Drugs and Health (2021), and The Pocket Guide to Illicit Drugs and Health-Revised Edition (2024).
