NDARC Report:
Prospective longitudinal cohorts of young Australians and their assessment of alcohol-related measures
Prospective longitudinal cohorts of young Australians and their assessment of alcohol-related measures
Alcohol use is the leading global risk factor for disease among young people aged 10–24 years, with two in five young Australians drinking at levels that increase their risk of acute harm, and one in three drinking at levels that increase long-term harm. Risky drinking habits in adolescence often continue into adulthood, so early intervention is key.
Longitudinal cohort studies are essential for understanding alcohol use among youth, answering questions on the natural history of alcohol use, risk and protective factors, and the impact on health. Several Australian cohorts track alcohol-related measures, and findings have already influenced policy. This report aims to identify existing and ongoing Australian longitudinal cohorts capturing data on alcohol use in adolescence and early adulthood, helping to inform future prevention and intervention efforts.
