Monitoring alcohol consumption in Australia: Moving towards best practice
Monitoring alcohol consumption in Australia: Moving towards best practice
Population level alcohol consumption predicts a variety of harms, which substantially burdens individuals, communities, and the health and justice systems. Monitoring population consumption levels is important for managing and predicting changes in harm, alerting us to emerging trends, and informing policy. This seminar examines the different methods by which population level alcohol consumption has been and is currently monitored in Australia, and the limitations to these approaches. The best practices for monitoring alcohol consumption are also discussed, as well as the changes that would allow Australia to move into this space.
Dr Nic Taylor is an alcohol policy researcher at the National Drug Research Institute. His work involves the use of epidemiological data to monitor alcohol consumption trends across Australia and tracking trends in alcohol-related harm. His program of work includes monitoring trends in youth drinking, evaluating the impact of alcohol restrictions on violence and vibrancy in nightlife settings, and evaluating the impact on the Northern Territory’s minimum unit price on consumption, consumers and harm.
