Substance use disorder and pregnancy: What does it mean for mothers?
This webinar focuses on the health needs and health care of a pregnant person with substance use disorder, with a particular focus on maternal health. It discusses the preconception period, including care for those wanting to conceive and those wanting to avoid pregnancy. The webinar also covers care during pregnancy, focusing on maternal health and co-morbidities, as well as obstetric care. Lastly, it explores care in the post-partum period, including optimisation of health and recommendations for birth spacing and future pregnancy planning.
Dr Kelly McNamara is a clinician scientist and practicing obstetrician gynaecologist at the University of Newcastle and John Hunter Hospital, NSW, Australia. Kelly has a particular interest in the reproductive health and pregnancy care for women with psychosocial complexities, including those with substance use disorder. Her PhD examined the intersection between unplanned pregnancy and substance use disorder, and tested pathways to improve access to contraception. Her ongoing work examines maternal heath and care pathways for women with psychosocial complexities.
