Embracing Cultural Celebrations

One of the cornerstones of our equity and diversity efforts is the celebration of various cultural events that reflect the rich tapestry of our global community. Over the first few months of 2024 we have celebrated events such as Chinese New Year and Harmony Day. These celebrations not only provide an opportunity for our students and staff to learn about different cultures but also serve as a reminder of the importance of inclusivity in our UNSW Aviation community.

The UNSW Aviation team celebrates Chinese New Year by participating in the tossing of the Prosperity Salad!

Women in Aviation International Scholarship

We are pleased to announce that the first recipient of our Women in Aviation International (WAI) Scholarship for 2024 is Amy Daum Jeong, from the Bachelor of Aviation (Management).  Congratulations Amy!

As part of this opportunity, Amy was able to attend the Women in Aviation International event in Orlando, Florida as a guest of the largest chapter in WAI in the world.  Our Head of School Prof Brett Molesworth also attended this event. This was a fantastic opportunity to learn more about WAI, their mission and support.

UNSW Aviation is currently working on other exciting initiatives to support women like Amy pursue their goals for a career in aviation.

Student Outreach and Engagement

Inspiring the next generation of aviation enthusiasts is integral to our mission, with UNSW Aviation hosting and participating in outreach events, including those targeted at school-age students.

On International Women’s Day 2024, we had the pleasure of hosting a UNSW Aviation stand at the Women in STEM event at the Australian National Maritime Museum.  There was much excitement and enthusiasm as students engaged in interactive search-and-find and trivia activities, where they learnt about exciting career opportunities in the aviation industry. Many were surprised to learn about the women that made the industry what it is today, including the 469 women that have graduated from UNSW Aviation over the past 20 years.

We also participated in the Airshows Downunder Shellharbour (formerly Wings Over Illawarra) for the second year, which was a fantastic opportunity to spread our message beyond Sydney. With an attendance of 10,000 visitors across three days, it was a great opportunity for UNSW Aviation to connect with students and their parents from the Illawarra Region.

Our aim is to ensure that aspiring aviators from all areas of Australia (and the globe) feel welcomed and supported in their journey towards a career in aviation. Whether through cultural celebrations, outreach events, or ongoing support for students from all backgrounds, we are committed to creating a community where everyone feels valued and empowered to pursue their dreams.
