Services are delivered by students enrolled in the UNSW Master of Psychology (Forensic) program under the direct supervision of qualified forensic psychologists.

Assessment

UFPC provides a range of forensic psychological assessments. An assessment may help answer questions about risk, mental health, treatment needs, behavioural support or cognitive functioning.

Assessments may include

  • Risk assessment

  • Treatment recommendations 

  • Behavioural support assessment 

  • Cognitive assessment 

  • Fitness

Assessments may involve a review of relevant information, a clinical interview and psychological testing. A report is prepared in response to the specific referral question.

Important referral information

Any assessment associated with a court hearing, sentencing or other legal proceeding must be referred through legal counsel with clear instructions about the referral question and required outcome.

Therapy

UFPC provides tailored forensic psychological therapy for people experiencing concerns related to offending, trauma, emotional regulation, substance use, parenting or other forensically related issues.

Therapy is delivered by students under the supervision of qualified forensic psychologists.

Types of therapy

Offence-based intervention

This intervention addresses personal and systemic factors associated with offending while building on individual strengths and protective factors.

Trauma-based intervention

This intervention aims to reduce the effects of trauma and build strategies to help prevent future harm. It may include psychoeducation and safety planning.

Other mental health interventions

Tailored support may be available for forensically related concerns such as substance use, parenting difficulties, experiences of victimisation and emotional regulation.

PCI-T

Parent–Child Interaction Therapy includes live coaching to support positive interactions between children and their parents or carers.

SPARK Program

The SPARK Program provides assessment and intervention for children and adolescents who engage in fire misuse behaviours.

Group therapy

Family Connections is a free, evidence-based 12-week program for partners, family members, friends and carers of people experiencing emotional dysregulation.

The program provides peer support, education and practical skills informed by dialectical behaviour therapy.
