Let's set up your Windows device
The guide below outlines the steps required to set up your UNSW IT-managed Windows device for first use. During this process, you will connect to the internet, sign in with your UNSW credentials, and complete Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to securely configure your Windows device. The setup typically takes around 20 minutes and may involve several automatic restarts. Once complete, your device will be ready for access to UNSW systems and applications.
Step 1
Power on and select region
Start your Windows device. When prompted, select Australia from the list of regions to begin setup.
Step 2
Choose keyboard layout
When asked to select a keyboard layout, choose US and click Yes.
Ensure US is selected—otherwise, your password may not be entered correctly later.
Step 3
Connect to the internet
Next, connect your device to the internet. You can use either a wired (Ethernet) connection or Wi-Fi.
On campus:
Select eduroam, then click Connect.
Enter your zID email address (zid@ad.unsw.edu.au) and zPass, then select Connect when prompted.At home:
Select your home Wi-Fi network and enter your Wi-Fi password.
Once connected, click Next to proceed.
Step 4
Sign in with your UNSW account
Enter your zID email address (zid@ad.unsw.edu.au) and zPass when prompted to continue setup.
Step 5
Complete Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Approve the MFA request when prompted.

After successful authentication, the device will begin its initial configuration.
This process may take up to 20 minutes, and your device may restart multiple times.
Step 6
Confirm setup prompt
When the next screen appears, press the space bar, then click OK to continue.
Step 7
Select organisation sign-in
Choose Sign in to ad.unsw.edu.au.
Step 8
Final sign-in
Enter your zID email address (zid@ad.unsw.edu.au) and zPass again to complete the setup.
Step 9
Complete setup
Click OK when prompted. Windows will now load to the desktop.
