Develop a practical outcome through a self-initiated project that combines disciplines, interests and skills and aligns with the thematic framework of Ethics in Design.

Working within the thematic framework of Ethics in Design, I chose to engage with sustainability to compliment my disciplines of Object and Textile Design. This brief allowed me to combine my passion for natural and reused materials, weaving, lighting design and organic sculptural forms. The studio classes led us through various stages that required extensive research, iteration and reflection. This experience allowed me to achieve an outcome that truly reflects my practice and identity as a designer.

Rephrase addresses the excessive amount of plastic stretch wrap used and discarded within fresh produce markets. This plastic wrap is used in large quantities to protect and transport pallets of produce, however it is then sent to landfill. Reusing the plastic in its found condition through a handmade technique means that plastic recycling processes of sorting, cleaning and melting are not required. The plastics durable nature allows it to be stretched and woven to create lightweight and versatile forms. The weave illuminates beautifully with light, highlighting the translucent glow of the material and projecting patterned shadows on surrounding surfaces. The plastic weave is supported by restored and reused pallet wood also collected from the market. The designed reuse of discarded materials aims to highlight their value and potential to be abstracted from their original environment and adopt a new life and aesthetic.
