Artwork title: Mad Racket

‘Mad Racket’ can be divided into two parts, mad which is defined as mentally ill, and racket – a loud unpleasant noise. Mad can also be defined informally as enthusiastic about something, making mad racket an excitement about noise. Hence mad racket can be understood from a different perspective. From a certain point of view, an individual playing and enjoying loud music is a positive mad racket for one but a negative mad racket for another. Mad racket is dependent on the context of the racket and the perspective it is viewed from. Through this project, there are 3 characters with 3 different perspectives. Each character experiences racket in a different way, with one of the characters experiencing both sides of the mad racket.

Artwork title: Unconscious Dream

To define ‘Unconscious Dream’, we can use the definition of unconscious to help further explore the meaning of dream. Unconscious can be used to describe an unresponsive person, or a decision/action made by a person without realising it. From this, dreams can be seen as an unconscious decision since most dreams come and go during our sleep without our awareness. The amount of control one has over their dream varies with many conditions, such as their most recent thoughts, experiences, emotion, tiredness, etc. The complexity and quality of the story in our dreams also varies unconsciously from complex to simple or even no story, and sometimes the number of dreams we experience in one night can also vary from one long dream to many consecutive different dreams. This project explores the world of an 'Unconscious Dream’ and allows us to observe it with a conscious mind.

Artwork title: Fight

VFX 1 is an introduction into the Nuke VFX system. For this project, I choose to create a visual effect short based on the sci-fi genre. The result was a simple sci-fi battle between a lightsaber and a blaster, with some sci-fi magic.

Artwork title: The Sea of Horrors

This project was created from September to December 2022, when AI technologies had just been optimised for an everyday pc. This short film was an experiment on AI Text to Image software, testing and exploring the limitation and possibility of AI technologies. Images were generated through a locally installed Stable Diffusion and animated through Adobe Photoshop and Adobe After Effects.

Artwork title: The Doorway

For this project, ‘The Doorway’ was the given prompt. The visual effect shot was inspired by the theme of fantasy, such as the world of ‘The Lord of Rings’. The concept was of a character entering an invisible doorway from the everyday world and is teleported to a fantasy world. This project combines the uses of matte painting, point tracking, 3d tracking, roto-mask, and animation.

Artwork title: The Moment of Truth

For this project, ‘The Moment of Truth’ was the given prompt. The resulting concept was of a flashback scene that would reveal the truth to the main character. The shot would start in the final moments of a battle between 2 characters. With the main character on the ground, he flashes back and realises the truth, giving him strength to finish the battle. This project uses a range of visual effect techniques, such as matte painting, nuke’s 3d camera, nuke’s 3d system, point tracking, greenscreen, and compositing in visual effect assets.

Hello there, I’m Andrew Huynh, a second year Media Arts student interested in everything filmmaking, from VFX to animation.
