International Women's Day Feature: PhD Candidate Umme Urmi

Growing up in a society where men predominantly held positions of power, my mother's influence on me was significant. She always believed in equal chances for everyone, no matter their gender. Her lessons about believing in myself and being brave enough to chase my dreams shaped me who I am today. My journey into microbiology started accidentally but quickly evolved into a passion. Despite the inherent risks in research, I couldn't imagine myself in any other field. Taking baby steps towards my dream, I am now on the path to earning a PhD, which I believe will pave the way for my future. I've been fortunate to have remarkable mentors throughout my journey, regardless of their gender, race, or background. They've provided unwavering support and guidance, helping me overcome challenges and stay focused on my goals. I am grateful for the lessons I learn from them, and their encouragement has been instrumental in my growth. I firmly believe that diversity enriches our world, and I am committed to creating a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued and respected and every voice will be heard, regardless of their background. As a woman in the field of microbiology, I am dedicated to supporting other women in achieving their goals. I believe in taking risks, learning from failures, and embracing one's true self. My goal is to promote self-acceptance, create an inclusive environment, and spread positivity in both my professional and personal life.
