Final-year Interior Architecture student Hayley Carr has won two black belt events in an international karate competition held in the UK.

Hayley, from the Faculty of the Built Environment, won the GKR World Karate Championships Women's Open Black Belt Kata competition, and the Women's Open Black Belt Kumite competition.

Although Hayley was defending her Kumite world title, which she also won two years ago, she was the first person to ever win both titles in the world championships.

"Most people just focus on one event, so it was a pretty big deal," she says.

Talking about combining her study and sport 21-year-old Hayley says: "There are pretty much no similarities between my course and my sport, which most people find rather amusing! I like that though - it keeps everything in my life really interesting, and forces a great balance. I suppose you have to be quite disciplined for both things though, and karate has taught me a lot of that."
