Businesses should be managed for long-term value maximisation and sustainability rather than quarter-by-quarter, said Chua Sock Koong, Chief Executive of the SingTel Group.

Ms Chua was speaking at the first Meet the CEO event for 2009. The popular series for alumni is hosted by the Australian School of Business at UNSW.

SingTel has the biggest mobile customer base in Asia outside China, with more than 216 million customers. It has major investments across the region including in Australia, where it owns Optus.

Ms Chua outlined how SingTel is steering a course through the global financial crisis by remaining focused on executing its long-term business plan. She said the sector is buffered from the global contraction to some extent because telecommunications services are a basic necessity.

She described how in some emerging markets, mobile communications have taken the place of fixed-line communication because of the prohibitive cost of building fixed line infrastructure.
