Nina-Marie Lister, a planner and ecologist at Ryerson University in Toronto, will on Wednesday deliver UNSW Built Environment’s next Utzon Lecture, Resilience beyond rhetoric: Design for a new sustainability.

Lister, who is Graduate Program Director and Associate Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at Ryerson where she founded and directs the Ecological Design Lab, will discuss contemporary ideas about resilience in politics and planning, against a backdrop of rising concern about climate change.

From its origins in ecology and engineering to its emergence as a policy construct, resilience will play a vital role in the world’s ability to respond and adapt to the effect of climate change on the environment, communities and infrastructure.

Nina-Marie Lister is delivering the next UNSW Utzon Lecture.

From 2009-2014, Lister was Visiting Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. A Registered Professional Planner with post-graduate training in landscape ecology and urban planning, she is the founding principal of plandform.com, a creative studio practice exploring the relationship between landscape, ecology and urbanism.

Lister’s research, teaching and practice focus on the confluence of culture and nature: her work centres on landscape infrastructure and ecological processes in metropolitan regions, and looks at how to develop new methods for urban resilience and adaption.

She is the author of more than 40 professional practice and scholarly publications and her work has been featured in many planning and design exhibitions in North America.

In recognition of her international leadership in ecological design, Lister was awarded Honorary Membership in the American Society of Landscape Architects in 2015.
