New L3 Kingsford Line embraced by UNSW community

During what is a challenging time for the UNSW community due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the University has welcomed the State Government’s launch of the new Light Rail line which will operate from Circular Quay to Kingsford from today.

This will provide a more efficient and environmentally sustainable transport option for students and staff upon their return to the University’s lower Kensington campus.

The L2 Randwick Line between Randwick and Circular Quay has been operational since December 2019. The L1 line which runs from Central to Dulwich Hill has been in place since 2014.

The L3 Kingsford Line adds five new stops to the existing route, with a stop conveniently located at the entrance to UNSW on Anzac Parade. These new stops include ES Marks, Kensington, UNSW Anzac Parade, Kingsford and Juniors Kingsford.

UNSW President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ian Jacobs said that the Light Rail will play a vital role in improving campus accessibility for students, staff and visitors when the University community is able to reconnect.

“I thank the NSW Government for completing this project to better connect the Kingsford and Randwick community with the city,” he said.

“The commencement of this extension to the Light Rail means the people of UNSW and our neighbours have a modern and environmentally-friendly transport option to support essential travel. It will also be a welcome way to help us reconnect with family and friends once we get through this very difficult time.”

Light Rail services on the new L3 Kingsford line will operate every 4 to 8 minutes between Circular Quay and Moore Park, and every 8 to 12 minutes between Moore Park and Kingsford every day between 5am and 1am.

Arc Chair Ben Jones said the Light Rail offers a favourable transport option that will be an exciting addition to the experience of being a UNSW student, once the student community return to the Kensington campus for face-to-face learning.

“The L3 stop outside UNSW on Anzac Parade will introduce a great opportunity to further activate student life on lower campus,” he said.

“Stopping right outside a hub of student life like the Roundhouse, L3 will allow students to be instantly immersed in the UNSW community.”

Transport for NSW has advised that while there will be no changes to bus services at this time, bus services will be adjusted in the south east region to help reflect changed customer patterns.

With the extension of the Light Rail to the University’s lower campus, the limited number of students and staff still attending the Kensington campus are urged to be cautious while walking around the Light Rail tracks and not be distracted by mobile phones.
