Sophia's research area focuses on the use of geospatial technologies and participatory approaches to support environmental decision-making and management. Her current research uses geospatial technologies and spatial analysis to understand and report on gendered perceptions of safety in public urban spaces.

She has also participated in research projects on the use of GIS and remote sensing technologies for land use and land cover mapping, spatial data structures for marine accounting, as well as the integration of social and ecological data in spatial analyses.

Project: Towards a gender inclusive urban environment: spatio-temporal analysis of safety perceptions in public space

Supervised by: Shawn Laffan, Graciela Metternicht, Phillip Wadds

Project Description: Sophia's PhD project is about why, where and when people feel safe in public urban spaces. She draws on her knowledge of GIS and environmental geography to model crowdsourced safety perception data in reference to space and time. The intention is to package such data into evidence that can be used to develop gender inclusive cities.
