Dr Joanna Richmond
Dr. Joanna Biazik-Richmond is a histologist and electron microscopist with a unique multidisciplinary role that bridges biological and material sciences at UNSW. She completed her PhD in Anatomy and Histology at the University of Sydney in 2008, where she studied the evolution of viviparity and placental biology. She later worked at the Australian Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis (2009-2011) and as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Helsinki (2011-2018) specialising in cellular autophagy, cryofixation, and volume electron microscopy.
Since joining the University of New South Wales in 2018, Joanna has held a hybrid role as lecturer and laboratory manager of the Electron Microscopy PC2/GMO-certified cell culture facility. In this role, she provides technical training and collaborative support to researchers, hospitals, research centres, and industry partners. Her expertise includes transmission and scanning electron microscopy, high-pressure freezing, correlative imaging workflows, and advanced sample preparation. She also developed multidisciplinary cell culture training programs for researchers in chemistry, engineering, materials science, and biomedical research. Her work supports projects in nanoparticle uptake in cells and targeted drug delivery, biomaterials, tissue engineering and bio-scaffolds, cellular agriculture, and nanoscale imaging of biological material.
