Dr Natalie Kwai
My research interests cover neurodegeneration in metabolic disease, its pathogenesis, functional outcomes and protective avenues. Investigations through my PhD and postdoctoral studies have utilised cutting edge neurophysiology techniques, namely, axonal excitability techniques to delineate the underlying biophysical properties of nerves in patients with diabetes. My previous work indicated subclinical abnormalities in nerve function in patients with diabetes in the absence of neuropathy, further indicating that these abnormalities were not related to average glycaemia. Subsequent investigations revealed that these changes were related to the use of different modalities of insulin delivery, namely insulin pump therapy and further studies indicating that these alterations were related to glycaemic variability which is presently the subject of a Phase II Clinical Trial my group are undertaking in collaboration with Industry (Insulin Pump therapy for Reducing Diabetic complications ( InsPyReD ) study, ANZCRTN:12617000124336)
