Postgraduate Research Student

Renate Carius is conducting research that focuses on reconstruction processes following the 2015 twin earthquakes in Nepal which killed around 9,000 people, destroyed thousands of homes and severely damaged infrastructure across the region.

Community Architecture: permanence or impermanence in earthquake reconstruction of informal rural settlements in Nepal’ is the title of the proposed thesis, under supervision from Professor David Sanderson and Dr Christian Tietz.

The research explores how the reconstruction process is framed, what its effects are on rural informal settlements and how post-disaster methodology impacts permanent reconstruction practices in the global context.
