Overview

The Advanced Systems Engineering (SE) course aims to provide attendees with an advanced understanding of the concept and application of SE across a variety of industries. This course will actively develop participants' understanding of requirements engineering, the processes they undertake as part of the acquisition phase of the system lifecycle, the role and use of Verification and Validation (V&V) in realising capable systems, and the management of SE and variations on the standard SE processes.

Course content

The Courses applies the latest International Council on Systems EngineeringSE Body of Knowledge and International Test and Evaluation Association approaches and practices to describe the functions, roles, design and use of systems, including:

  • Requirements engineering and management for realising capable systems, including the various tools that can be used to elicit requirements;
  • The processes undertaken as part of conceptual design activities including stakeholder identification, system scoping, requirements definition etc. and the methods and tools used to carry out these processes;
  • The processes undertaken as part of preliminary design activities including configuration item identification, requirement allocation, interface management etc. and the methods and tools used to carry out these processes;
  • The use of Test and Evaluation (T&E) as part of a wider V&V program including the identification, costs and benefits, and management of T&E
  • The overarching management of SE processes throughout the system lifecycle; and
  • Variations on the standard SE methodologies including Model Based SE and Agile SE

Learning outcomes

Skills/competencies/knowledge that would be gained through this course:
  • UNSW Canberra certificate of completion/attendance
  • Masters credit: UNSW Canberra allows students who have successfully completed a minimum of 12 days of approved professional education courses to use those courses as credit in eligible postgraduate programs.

Who should attend

This three-day course will benefit people who are involved in the planning, execution and delivery of projects which involve multiple stakeholders, numerous objectives and many components and who are familiar with the core concepts of SE. Examples of such projects include designing a new aircraft, developing an Enterprise Resource Planning software package, planning a large infrastructure project, developing a new learning package for an organisation or developing a new product which will be integrated into a wider system.

Due to the nature of systems, this course is applicable to a wide variety of industries including Logistics, Manufacturing, Information Technology, Security, Defence and more.
