FAQs

  • UNSW IT offers three Wi-Fi networks:

    • eduroam – The preferred Wi-Fi network for all current UNSW staff and students. It provides secure internet access for laptops, tablets, and mobile phones. Recommended for all current students, staff and researchers. Secure, encrypted access on laptops, tablets and phones at UNSW and at thousands of participating institutions worldwide.
    • UNSW-IoT – For specialty/ “non-standard” / IT managed shared devices that cannot use eduroam (e.g., smart TVs, 3D printers, gaming consoles, sensors, lab equipment). Campus-only.
    • UNSW Guest – For visitors without eduroam. Provides short-term access for up to 7 days.

  • “IoT devices” are devices that don’t support standard Wi-Fi logins (802.1x) – for example: include things like smart TVs, 3D printers, gaming consoles, sensors and some lab instruments.

    If your device can’t connect to eduroam or doesn’t meet its setup requirements, connect it to UNSW-IoT instead.

    You should connect to UNSW-IoT if you are using a UNSW IT managed SHARED device such as: LapSafe Laptops, Shared Staff Laptops, Provided a Exam Laptop, or other shared devices that connect via Wi-Fi

    Note: UNSW-IoT only works on UNSW campuses. You won’t get the roaming benefits of eduroam at other participating institutions.

  • The certificate securely identifies your device and encrypts your connection. It’s safer than using just a password, helps prevent credential theft, and meets UNSW’s cybersecurity requirements—including secure access to Eduroam at UNSW and other universities worldwide.

  • The eduroam onboard certificate expires1 year after it’s issue as part of UNSW IT’s cyber security measures. To keep using eduroam after it expires, you’ll need to onboard your device again.

    You’ll receive an email reminder before your certificate expires, so you have time to re-onboard.

  • Yes. Currently all devices can either be onboarded to eduroam through the Get Online portal or connect through using your zid@ad.unsw.edu.au and zpass. 

    However, by onboarding your device via the getonline portal, this process:

    • Installs a security certificate that identifies your device
    • Configures your connection to eduroam
    • Provides better protection for your credentials and ensures reliable access at UNSW and other eduroam-enabled institutions

    Note: If you changed your UNSW password, you will need to "forget" the eduroam network on your device and reconnect to the network using the new password. 

  • Yes. Once your device is set up for eduroam at UNSW, it will automatically connect to eduroam at any participating institution worldwide.

    No extra configuration is needed. If you have already set up eduroam at UNSW, select eduroam from the Wi-Fi settings when you’re on another participating institution and you will be connected to eduroam with your UNSW credentials.

    The opposite is true. If you are a visiting staff and you’ve set up eduroam at your home institution, you can use the same credentials to connect to eduroam when visiting UNSW campuses.

  • UNSW, as the provider and administrator of this Wired or Wireless Network (the Network), is collecting personal information for the following purposes:

    • providing you with access to the Network
    • delivery of personalised services such as wayfinding and smart parking
    • supporting security and safety activities
    • identifying and investigating security vulnerabilities or unauthorised use of the Network
    • auditing, planning, and quality improvement activities.

    This information is personal information for the purposes of the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1988 (NSW).  The supply of this information is voluntary, but if you choose not to provide this information you will not be able to access the Network.  Information that we collect from you to enable access to the Network is username, email (in case of guest self-registration), phone (in case of guest self-registration), social media identity (in case of guest login using a social media account), and Display Name/Group Membership/Title.  Information collected through your use of the Network includes location of user (based on proximity to specific access points), Device MAC, Device IP, Device Operating System, and Device Hostname.

    This information will only be accessible by staff who require access for the uses outlined above.  UNSW is using third party providers, Aruba Central Software as a Service and Azure Platform as a Service to provide services for the Network.  These providers are bound by the University's privacy and security requirements.
