Carly Hawkins is a PhD candidate and sessional academic at UNSW, Sydney. Carly also completed her Master of International Relations at UNSW for which she was a Dean's List recipient.

Her doctoral research examines the impact of the Australian government’s offshore refugee processing policy on children, with a focus on the role of psycho-social factors in child and youth education. Carly's professional background as a practicing teacher and school principal has provided a foundation from which to explore her thesis through refugee studies and the sociology of education. She is particularly interested in government policy and international relations having worked on government contracts and also having worked for Australian and international NGOs.

Carly has 20 years experience supporting communities placed at-risk through educational and wellbeing intervention. She has worked in Sydney, London, Nauru and rural Tanzania specialising in teaching students with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Western Sydney University), a Bachelor of Teaching (Western Sydney University), a Graduate Diploma in Political and International Studies (University of New England) and a Master of International Relations (University of New South Wales). Carly lectures and tutors in the School of Social Sciences at both the University of New South Wales and the University of Tasmania.
