Bachelor of Pharmacy (USyd), Master of International Public Health, Master of Public Health (UNSW)
I initially decided to enrol at UNSW because of the unique dual degree offering and the breadth of available courses that I felt would support me in a future career in public health. My positive experience with the School of Public Health and Community Medicine made it an easy decision for me to want to further my research studies with the School.
The most important thing I have learnt throughout my studies at SPHCM is that public health is more than just the individual, rather, it is about how we can seek to positively influence the health of all. As a health professional, this really challenged and broadened my thinking, because it encouraged me to consider how challenges in health can be solved in a collaborative, multi-sector approach.
Maintaining work/life balance has been one of the most challenging aspects of my studies. However, the flexible learning options and the support of my PhD supervisors have allowed me to manage work, study, and travel!
I have enjoyed the variety of course options, including the opportunity to undertake a research project as part of my masters program. This gave me the confidence to enrol in higher degree research studies, and I have enjoyed continuing in my studies in an area of interest.
Challenge yourself and embrace every opportunity – you never know what you can achieve!
My degrees have opened up career opportunities that have allowed me to contribute to the health sector at a system level. This has been in multiple ways – from policy and program management in a not-for-profit organisation, to conducting program evaluations and developing models of care for health services as a consultant. I am confident that I will continue to use the practical skills and knowledge that I gained throughout my studies on a day-to-day basis throughout my career.
