About

Leela is interested in internal variability of the ocean - variability that is intrinsic to the ocean system rather than being externally driven (by the atmosphere, for example). She uses a range of numerical models from highly idealised models to coupled climate models. Idealised models can be purpose-built to understand the basic physical processes of a particular phenomenon, while coupled climate models can be used to test the hypotheses developed from idealised models and then compare the results to observations. In particular, Leela has studied Atlantic Multidecadal Variability, bimodality of the Kuroshio, and patterns of sea level variability in the Pacific, Indian and Southern Oceans.
