Wenjing Yu is a PhD candidate in the School of Education, UNSW Sydney, supervised by Associate Professor Dennis Alonzo and Professor Andy Gao. Her doctoral research examines the communicative functions and dynamic adaptation of pragmatic strategies used by Chinese international students in English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) academic group discussions. Drawing on an Ethnography of Communication framework, her study combines video-recorded group discussions with stimulated recall to trace how strategy use shifts in real time within interactions. Her thesis argues that pragmatic competence in ELF academic interaction is better understood as a capacity for situated calibration than as a stable repertoire, and offers implications for pedagogy and assessment in internationalised higher education.
