The annual formation of sea ice in the Arctic and Antarctic is of order 10^7 km^2, comparable to the area of Australia.

This freezing of the surface water plays a role in both polar oceanography and climatology. The colloquium will discuss experiments using Magnetic Resonance Imaging, field data and simple mathematical models to describe the formation of polar ice and the evolution of the enriched brine which is released by the freezing process.
