"Alma Douglas, B.A. (Hons.1, Melb), lectured in Psychology and practised as a Clinical Psychologist, while being associated with the extra-curricular activities of the Department of Statistics at UNSW from 1952 to 1983. Members of staff, graduate students and visitors will remember many picnics and social evenings and barbeques at Oatley – this social interaction contributed substantially to the cohesiveness and productivity of the Department. But, most of all, her unobtrusive support for her husband Jim Douglas, while managing their family of Jan and Alan (both graduates of UNSW), enabled him to devote the time and effort which led to the establishment and success of the Department."

Timothy Yip, a first year UNSW student studying a double degree of Commerce/Science, was selected to be the first recipient of the Alma Douglas Scholarship.
