The Department of Statistics in the School of Mathematics and Statistics is offering a number of Research Associate positions for a minimum of 6 months. The positions are funded through an ARC Discovery Grant and an NHMRC grant. The research will be in the following areas:

* Statistical methods for flow cytometric data; and
* Time Series of Counts in evaluating hospital electronic
prescribing systems.

The aims in the *flow cytometry* area are to develop statistical methods, computational techniques and software for analysing large multivariate data sets as encountered in flow cytometric applications.
The statistical methods used are in the areas of statistical learning, semiparametric function estimation, features significance and statistical graphics. The project will be jointly supervised by Dr Inge Koch and Professor Matt Wand.

The aims in *the times series counts* project are to analyse
intervention models of daily time series of error counts arising in assessing the impact of introducing an electronic prescribing system into various wards in hospitals. The work involves logistic response models for correlated time series using recent models and methods developed by Professor Dunsmuir. The project will be supervised by
Professor William Dunsmuir.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to contribute to the research of one or both of these projects through the development of methodology, computational software, the analysis of data and the writing of research papers.

The positions are full time, fixed term for an initial period of six months with a possibility of extension. Salary $62K – $68K per annum for PhD holders, and $51K - $56K per annum for Honours/Masters degree holders. Plus 9% Employer superannuation.

Essential Criteria:

1. A Honours or good Masters degree in Statistics or equivalent, and
a PhD in Statistics or a related area for the postdoctoral
position (or being close to obtaining a PhD).
2. High level skills in statistical computing in particular in R orSplus.
3. A strong mathematical background.
4. Good communication skills.

Desirable Criteria:
1. Background in multivariate analysis, density estimation andstatistical learning.
2. Background in time series.
3. Working knowledge of Excel.
4. Knowledge of Matlab.
