The School held its inaugural Advanced Mathematics Day on Friday 7 September 2012. Second and third year students from our Advanced Mathematics program listened to a variety of talks from the three heads of Departments, from current PhD students and former Honours students, from the president of MATHSOC and the Chief Operating Officer of the Australian Centre for Commercial Mathematics. Informal discussions between students and staff took place during the breaks.Dean of the UNSW Faculty of Science, Prof Merlin Crossley

Some recurring themes from the presentations included advice to "do as much mathematics and statistics as you can" in your degree, and to "talk to people" when making big decisions such as choosing an Honours supervisor, or what to do after your degree.

Thank you to everyone who attended and to those who organised the event.
Head of Applied Mathematics, Prof Wolfgang Schief
