Members of the School of Mathematics and Statistics are saddened by the death of one of its former Heads of School, Professor Garth Gaudry, who passed away on 18 October following a long illness.

Garth was well known for his research in abstract harmonic analysis and for his support of high quality mathematics education in Australia. 

Through his career he held many pivotal leadership positions in Australian mathematics, including:

- President, Australian Mathematical Society 1988-1990.                                

- Foundation Director of the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute 2002.            

- Foundation Director of the Centre of Excellence for Education in Mathematics 2003-2008.

Garth joined  the School of Mathematics and Statistics at UNSW as Professor of Pure Mathematics in 1993 and he was Head of School from 1996-2002.

The funeral for Garth Gaudry was held on Thursday 25 October in Saint John's Anglican Church, Gordon.
