Professor Eric Friedlander's public lecture at UNSW

The School had the pleasure of hosting Professor Eric Friedlander, President of the American Mathematical Society, over two days last week. He delivered a public lecture, "Glimpses of a Mathematical World", at the University during his brief visit.
On Tuesday 27th November, around 100 people gathered in the Ritchie Theatre of the Scientia Building for Professor Friedlander’s presentation. The lecture was attended by School members, students, and academics from other universities. During his talk, Professor Friedlander chronicled his long association with mathematics across several decades, and provided his own insights into the future of mathematics. To the crowd’s delight, he looked at some of the common stereotypes of mathematicians, and also discussed the discipline’s cultural impact.
Professor Friedlander outlined the current state of mathematics in his home country of the U.S., and globally. He also considered the significant potential for online courses. Additionally, Professor Friedlander revealed some of the main challenges facing the discipline, such as shrinking resources, but emphasised the fundamental importance of mathematics and mathematicians to social, cultural and economic life.
Following Professor Friedlander’s talk, attendees enjoyed afternoon tea in the Scientia foyer, where many had the opportunity to meet and speak with the man himself.
