Pi Day, an annual celebration commemorating the mathematical constant "Pi", was observed in the School of Mathematics and Statistics yesterday. An impromptu morning tea was held in the staff common room, where pies bearing the symbol of Pi were consumed.

MathSoc, our student mathematics society, held a Pi Day BBQ at the Naked Dr Zdravko Botev enjoying the Pi morning teaLady Lawn. A steady stream of hungry students and staff members filtered through the lawn from 11am, and MathSoc members socialised with students old and new. Cutting to the front of the lengthy queue was no problem - that is, if you could recite Pi to 20 places! Dr Mike Hirschhorn was one of the lucky queue jumpers.

MathSoc's Pi Day BBQ

Thank you to Dr Chris Tisdell, who organised the specially made pies and travelled to Matraville's House of Pie to collect them. Thank you also to MathSoc, who ran a very successful BBQ!
