Dr Chris Tisdell was awarded the UNSW Vice Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence at a ceremony in the Clancy Theatre yesterday afternoon. Dr Tisdell was announced as a recipient of the award, which aspires to encourage, recognise and reward excellence in teaching, late last year.
Before the award was presented, a steady stream of students - including several mathematics and statistics students - were first conferred their degrees.
Dr Tisdell’s award was presented by Dean of Science, Professor Merlin Crossley, who delivered a glowing speech about Dr Tisdell on behalf of Vice Chancellor Frederick Hilmer. He said that Dr Tisdell was an “outstanding teacher”, who was “much lauded by students, highly respected by peers, and a leading pioneer in online teaching”.
The speech cited Dr Tisdell’s impressive student satisfaction rating, whereby he has attained 100% overall satisfaction from student evaluations in 15 courses over the past eight years.
Dr Tisdell’s “extraordinarily successful” endeavours into online teaching, via his popular YouTube channel and interactive e-Book, were highly commended by the Vice Chancellor. The revelation that Dr Tisdell’s videos have received over two million hits drew audible gasps and cheering from the audience.
Congratulations to Dr Tisdell!
