Fresh Science national finals

Dr Robin Beck and Dr Angela Crean, of the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, have been selected as national finalists in the Fresh Science competition.
A total of 12 finalists were chosen from 58 early-career scientists around the country who entered the five state finals to learn how to present their research well to a general audience and the media.
Participants had to write a press release, practice radio and TV interviews with journalists, come up with answers to tricky questions and entertain a crowd over a glass of wine at the end of the day.
Next week the 12 finalists will undergo four more days of intensive training in how to communicate their science with the public, government, industry, business and schools at the Fresh Science national final in Melbourne.
One task will be to discuss their discoveries in a pub atmosphere, using rhyming language. Another is to talk to students and teachers at a schools forum at Melbourne Museum.
Then press releases will be issued about their research and they will be interviewed by the media - for real, this time.
Dr Beck will discuss his research on fossil marsupials and Dr Crean her research on sea squirts.
