UNSW Mathematics: Number one in Australia in 2013 ARWU rankings

For the second consecutive year, UNSW Mathematics has ranked first in Australia in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

The 2013 rankings have also revealed that UNSW is the only Australian university in the top 100 for mathematics. Our impressive ranking places us in the company of other high calibre institutions.

UNSW Mathematics has had a very strong result in the ARWU rankings over the past five years. From 2010-2011 we have ranked equal first in Australia, and in 2009 we ranked second in the country.

Head of School Bruce Henry commented on the 2013 results. "Mathematics has always been a central discipline at UNSW, and the School of Mathematics and Statistics at UNSW is the largest of its kind in Australia. We are proud to be ranked Number One in Australia for Mathematics in the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities", said Professor Henry. "Of course in rankings, as in election polls, it is wise to be a little cautious about paying too much attention to such things, but leading performance in the Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities is particularly gratifying as it is based on objective measures and transparent data."

Ranking indicators for ARWU include the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes, Fields Medals and Turing Awards, the number of Highly Cited Researchers, amount of papers indexed in Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE) and Social Science Citation Index (SSCI). The percentage of papers published in the top 20% journals of each field is also included.
