Advanced Mathematics Day
The second annual Advanced Mathematics Day was held in the Tyree Room, Scientia, last Friday afternoon. Students of the Advanced Mathematics program, plus our Masters and PhD students, attended sessions throughout the day.

The morning session, attended by first and second year students, heard from each of the Heads of Department (John Murray, Ian Doust, Spiro Penev). Honours student Peter Ayre delivered a talk on his experience studying Advanced Mathematics and doing Honours at UNSW, and MathSoc President Barton Lee spoke to the students about the Maths Society's activities.

Students enjoyed morning tea before the second session of the day commenced. Third and fourth year students heard information about Honours projects from Honours Director Gary Froyland, and each of the Honours coordinators (Bill McLean, Daniel Chan, Feng Chen). Current Honours student Georgia Tsambos and PhD student Isaac Donnelly spoke about their experiences of undertaking Honours. The group also heard engaging presentations by industry representatives: Mike Lee and Dario Garcia from CBA, James Enoch from SAS, and Pip Russell and Scott Wooldridge from Schneider Electric.

One of our outstanding students, Edward McDonald, was awarded the School of Mathematics and Statistics Scholarship. In May, Edward was awarded three prizes for his exceptional academic performance.

Lunch was held in the room and was attended by students and several School staff members.

The last session of the day, for the Honours, Masters and PhD students, heard from Pip Russell and Scott Wooldridge from Schneider Electric, Bernard Kachoyan from DSTO, Scientia Professor Trevor McDougall, and Daniel Mansfield, who has just finished his PhD in the School.

All attendees were entered into a prize draw, and three lucky students won iPad Minis.
