Members of the School of Mathematics and Statistics have been outstandingly successful in the latest round of ARC Discovery grants and Fellowships, which were announced on 8 November.

School members received eight Discovery Projects, comprising just over a quarter of those received by the UNSW Faculty of Science, and about 10% of the UNSW total. In addition, a School member was a CI on another Discovery Project awarded through the ANU. Recent appointment Professor Igor Shparlinski received a Discovery Outstanding Researcher Award (DORA) as part of his Discovery Project.

In the Fellowship announcements, Dr Zdravko Botev received a DECRA, while Dr Frances Kuo and Dr Guoyin Li received Future Fellowships.

Our Discovery Project success means that for two of the last three years, we received the most funding in the 01 Mathematical Sciences classification code of any School of mathematics and statistics in Australia.

On the same day as the ARC announcements, the School was awarded a Vice Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellowship to Dr Thai Doan Chuong, who will join us from Vietnam soon. The School was also successful in this scheme last year, and we are pleased to welcome Dr Alina Ostafe, who joined us last month.

Rounding off the School's research grant bonanza is the news that Sci. Prof Trevor McDougall and Prof John Murray have obtained UNSW Goldstar Awards for their research projects commencing in 2014, while Dr Adelle Coster, Dr Feng Chen and Dr Yanan Fan have received Faculty Silverstar Awards.
