Our most recent Girls Do The Maths workshop was held last Friday, 16th May. The aim of this workshop series is to encourage female high school students who are interested in mathematics to consider maths as a career.
This year, we attracted 50 students from 12 different high schools: St Andrews College, Marayong; Macquarie Grammar School; Loreto Normanhurst; Sydney Secondary College; Newtown High School of the Performing Arts; Kincumber High School; Sydney Girls High School; Stella Maris College; Barker College; St George Girls High School; Pennant Hills High School; and OLSH College.
The students attended information sessions throughout the day, with presentations from School members Bruce Henry, Gary Froyland, Gery Geenens, Joanna Wang, and Randell Heyman, plus talks from guest speakers Jessica Egan (Taylor Fry) and Patricia Mendez (BOCSAR).
The students were taken on a tour around the university campus, and also got to sit in on maths lectures run by Adelle Coster and Milan Pahor. Students cited the campus tour and maths lectures as a highlight of the day.
Thank you to those who attended, all of the speakers, and to the organising committee of the workshop - in particular, Yanan Fan, Catherine Greenhill, Adelle Coster, Donna Salopek and Frances Kuo.
