Professor James Franklin's article, Why mathematics matters, featured in Radio National's top 10 articles of 2014.
The list, which spotlights RN's most popular articles of the year, includes pieces from a diverse range of topics, including electricity prices, sexism in China, penguin-saving dogs, and unknown facts about World War I.
Professor Franklin's article explains why Australia needs more mathematicians, and why the discipline should be taught more broadly. He contends that while many people dismiss the relevance of maths beyond high school, mathematics exists in the physical world and has the capacity to help us think more intuitively about the world around us.
Professor Franklin was interviewed on Radio National's The Philosopher's Zone in December to discuss his latest book, "An Aristotelian Realist Philosophy of Mathematics".
