UNSW Engineering boosts engagement with industry
UNSW Engineering has made two new appointments aimed at boosting engagement with industry in Australia and internationally.

UNSW Engineering, Australia’s biggest engineering faculty, has appointed Dr Ian Gibson to the role of Associate Dean (Industry & Innovation). He will be responsible for overseeing the development of engineering research relationships with industry; be the primary point of contact for corporations seeking to work with the faculty; support UNSW researchers in creating links with industry; and manage as well as foster UNSW’s major research with outside partners.
Gibson has been a scientist and engineer and has managed research and development at executive level, and has 25 years of experience working at the interface of industry and universities.
He was the founding CEO of Intersect Australia – a collaborative technology company that develops innovative computing and data services for the research community – and led it for more than six years. Joining CiSRA (Canon Information Systems Research Australia) shortly after gaining his PhD in computer science from UNSW Engineering, he rose to general manager of the advanced technology division. Gibson starts at UNSW on 14 July 2015.
Another appointment is that of Stephen Woolridge to the role of Senior Faculty Development Manager. He will be responsible for leading the expansion of philanthropic fundraising from industry, foundations, alumni and individuals to support the research and education goals of the faculty – from Australian and international sources.
Formerly Acting Director, Development for UNSW – where he played an integral role in overseeing the University’s fundraising effort – he returns to the Faculty of Engineering where he was previously Development Manager. He rejoins UNSW Engineering full-time in August 2015.
