Seventeen UNSW scholarships worth $748,000 are being offered specifically for rural students to attend Australia’s top engineering faculty in Sydney.

The UNSW Engineering Rural Scholarships provide financial support for rural students to pursue a degree across a range of engineering disciplines including – computers and artificial intelligence, biomedical, alternative energy, aerospace and mechanical, chemical and food science, civil and mining.

“The scholarship really helped me transition from a rural area to the city and focus on my studies,” says Steven Falconieri, a third year Computer Science Engineering student from Ingham who received the UNSW Engineering Rural Scholarship in 2012.

Students receive up to $11,000 per year and are eligible for accommodation on one of the six colleges on campus, where students from around the country and the world stay in modern facilities just 15 minutes from some of Sydney’s top beaches and cafes. Female applicants are encouraged, and a host of scholarships target young women as part of the University’s Women in Engineering program.

The scholarships aim to attract talented young adults with a range of attributes, such as academic achievements, personal attributes, leadership skills and a capacity to contribute to university life at UNSW. Financial circumstances are also taken into account.

“I would definitely encourage rural students to apply for UNSW’s scholarship program. It’s a unique opportunity that allows you to think bigger than just your hometown, making the world your oyster,” Falconieri says.

Applications close on 30 September 2015.
