Want to make your career mark in 2016? Looking for a career refresh or blazing a new path? These top ten pieces of advice come from experienced business leaders who have been up, down, turned around in their careers and made it to the top.

James Stevens (Founder of Roses Only, BCom 1987, Alumni Leader, Advisory Council Member), Diana Jones (Senior Project Manager, Jones Lang LaSalle, and winner of the 2015 Crystal Vision Award) and James Mabbott (Head of KPMG Innovate and President, Sydney Business Chamber), offered their advice at the last UNSW Business School young alumni event of 2015.

  1. Take a risk, recognise change and seek opportunity.
  2. Fake it until you make it.
  3. The biggest hindrance to making it big may be yourself.
  4. Don't just find yourself a mentor, but a sponsor - someone who will actively support your career moves.
  5. Do not be afraid of failure.
  6. Have as many conversations as possible. Be transparent and open.
  7. Be disruptive. Find a way of doing something new to stand out from the crowd.
  8. Instead of networking for the sake of it, build genuine rapport with those you meet across industries.
  9. Be well read. Continue to learn beyond an area of specialisation.
  10. Draw upon your passions and your strengths when navigating your career.
