Emeritus Professor John Nevile receives Australian Day Honour

Emeritus Professor and Visiting Professor at the UNSW Business School John Nevile has been awarded a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia.

He has been awarded the AM for his significant service to tertiary education, particularly economics, as an academic and author, and to professional organisations.

Professor Arghya Ghosh, head of the School of Economics at the UNSW Business School says “John is a macroeconomist with social justice policy bent. He has made significant contributions in the fields of macroeconomic policy, unemployment and history of economic thought, and has served as a member of numerous governmental advisory bodies. He has also been a consultant for major Australian Government enquiries.”

John Nevile is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia (since 1972) and a recipient of 2000 Distinguished Fellow Medal of the Economic Society of Australia (ESA) where he served as the President from 1980 to 1984. 

During his long and distinguished career at UNSW Australia, John served as a Professor of Economics, Head of School and the Dean of Faculty of Commerce and Economics (1982-89) which is now the UNSW Business School.

The UNSW Business School has named a position after him, the John Nevile Fellow in Economics. 

Tim Harcourt is the current JW Nevile Fellow of Economics UNSW Business School, and he describes John Nevile as “the best sort of economist there is. One who has a ‘cool head and a warm heart ‘, as Alfred Marshall described the ideal economic thinker.”

“John Nevile is both a thinker and a doer,” says Mr Harcourt. “He is a technically strong macro economist with social justice policy bent, and has been a great servant of academia and public policy making in Australia. His advisory activities covered a wide spectrum working with the ACTU, ACOSS and CEDA as well as serving on a number of federal and state government advisory bodies.”
