Professor Vaughan Jones of Vanderbilt University visited the School last week. He met several staff members during an informal lunch last Friday, before presenting a seminar in the Red Centre.

Professor Jones' seminar, Some unitary representations of Thompson's groups F and T, drew a crowd of over 30 attendees.

Professor Jones is currently Stevenson Distinguished Professor at Vanderbilt University. Among many honours, he is a recipient of the Fields Medal (1990), a Vice President of the International Guild of Knot Tyers (due to his work on knot theory), a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, a Fellow of the Royal Society and current Vice President of the International Mathematical Union.

Thanks very much to Pinhas Grossman for facilitating Professor Jones' visit.
